I’m sure you all are aware that Modern Makeup was a proud sponsor of the national teen model competition, Miss Teenage Canada 2016.

I’m here to give you a bit of a behind the scenes of all the hard work and perfection that our artists displayed throughout the pageant.

As a result of a full day of activities the team was up bright and early on the first day to meet at the Mississauga Holiday Inn Dixon Road on the top floor to do some set up and wait for our contestants to file through.

Personally, I have never seen so many makeup palettes, hair extensions and so many bottles of hairspray in one place before.

However, the room was filled with so much energy, talent and creativity that regardless of the fact that we had 54 models who needed to get their hair and makeup done before 4 o’clock, we managed to make it happen with only a short pizza break.

Below are some snippets of the days progress.

Also, these girls ranged form ages 14 to 18 and came from all over their country with their own unique story in their own beautiful way, and competed for the Miss Teenage Canada title.

It was mind blowing to see the confidence that was portrayed by each young lady and the way they attempted to build each other up during an intense time like this.

Especially relevant is that the final day of the pageant took place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto.

It was another whirlwind of cosmetic craziness, but a rewarding night indeed.

In conclusion these teen models go through a full day of hair and makeup and rehearsals before the big show even starts!

Finally, the winner of the 2016 Miss Teenage Canada Pageant was teen model Samantha Pierre.

It was a hectic few days but the team managed to pull it off with patience and grace.

Furthermore, I know this event would have not been possible without the wonderful artists who were part of #teammodernmakeup and I would like to take a moment to recognize some of our incredible artists!

Happy Sunday beauties!

We all love throwing our hair into soft and bouncy curls to jazz up our summery look of the day. But let’s be real, the humidity gets the best of it, and by noon it looks deflated and kinky. I’ve done a bit of research over the last few days and put together a few tips and tricks to make those curls last, regardless of the weather.

skip conditioner

Our beloved moisture concealer can actually do more harm than good. Turns out it’s harder to curl slippery hair than it is condoner-less hair. So ladies, keep it out of the process.

mousse it up

You’ll want to add some texture to your damp hair in order for the curls to get some grip. Work a palm full of volumizing mousse starting from the roots down to your tips to put some hold in your hair. According to Merakilane the Moroccan Oil Volumizing Mousse works wonders.

curl properly

We all know that heat can do more damage to your hair than anything so this is where I suggest you select a worthwhile heat protectant and use it religiously when curling your hair. Investing in a good quality curling iron is key to long lasting curls. Part your hair and ensure that each part cools before moving on to avoid getting flattened by above layers. Lastly, don’t forget to turn up the heat accordingly (higher-thick hair, lower-thin hair).

I threw in one of my personal favourite curling tutorials just in case you guys wanted some reference!

hair spray

This is a given. Once you’ve curled to satisfaction, throw some extra hold with a good hair spray and you’ll be set for your next summer event (not to mention- hairspray is basically hair perfume so curly scented hair? Yes please!). Any hairspray of your favour will do.

Happy Curling lovelies!

How To Take Care of Your Lashes

 Happy Sunday beauties!

If you’re anything like the natural beauty geek I am, you’re always surfing the internet for different ways and recipes you can keep your hair and skin in tip top shape. Today, we are going to step into the world of lovely lashes that need a little lovin’ every once in a while. We rely on these stunners to give our eyes definition, and coating them in mascara 24/7 isn’t the greatest thing for them. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep them long and healthy.

I know, I know. I get it. Even I am the biggest culprit when it comes to taking everything off before I sleep. But a routine like this is so so important for the well being of our lashes. Use a nice light eye makeup remover that is alcohol free to avoid drying them out.

With this great growth serum recipe from Sunnie Brook!

“Take any empty jar or bottle, add 1/4 of the container with alcohol-free Aloe Vera Gel (which lengthens lashes) + 1/4 with Castor Oil (which thickens lashes) + 1/2 with Vitamin E Oil (which lengthen lashes), then combine liquids with a gentle shake. Use a recycled mascara wand to apply to your lashes (or brows) at night. With regular use, you’ll soon be seeing results . . . . . and so will everyone else!”

This is perfect for your average DIY Queen.

For you guys who aren’t too into making your own, the article advises you to just go ahead and invest in a high end serum.

I suggest applying before bed for convenience.

This one is pretty much self explanatory. Ladies, rest, good food, and plenty of water are incredibly important for your well being. Always try and keep this a priority! Everything (including your lashes) will benefit from it ☺️

So there you have it lovelies! Be sure to keep checking back for posts every other Sunday. Keep up with us on insta @modernmakeupcan to keep updated with our work and snapchat @modernmakeupcan to get some behind the scenes glimpses.

Have a fabulash week!!! (ok I’m done)

50 Shades of Pink – 2 Valentine’s Day Looks with NO Red Lips!

Happy Friday Lovers!

Cupid’s Day is just around the corner and obviously in celebration, our Modern Makeup media team met up during the week for another photoshoot to show you a couple of sweet and steamy looks for this upcoming weekend.

This blog post is going to consist of TWO of our favourite Valentines Day looks! Jen decided to step away from your stereotypical Valentine’s Day red lip look and instead embraced every shade of pink in her palette; transitioning from a soft day time look to a sultry smokey evening face.

Although red lips are very popular right now there are still tons of women out there who just don’t feel comfortable rockin’ a red lip. Wearing a red lip can also require a lot of maintenance and when you’re alone with your special someone this Valentine’s Day constantly re-applying your lip colour can be somewhat of an annoyance. Keep life simple and try pink instead!

We started off with our usual Revlon Photoready Eye Primer and Brightener, ELF HD Lifting Concealer to help hide my midterm eye bags.  Then we sponged on Revlon’s Photoready Air Brush Effect Foundation in 005, and smeared on some MAC 24h Extend Eye Base Primer.

On the eyes Jen decided to put her new PATI DUBROFF Dream Pallette to use with Rose Quartz on the base, Dessert Rose on the crease, Lilac for the purple smokey look, and Smoke was used to diffuse the eyeliner and make it look softer.

To line the eyes she used Loreal Infallible’s 24h Lacquer Liner in the shade Dark Slate. And to fan out those lashes she used Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Mascara.

For contour, MAC’s Bone Beige was used. In order to warm it up a bit Jen used some pink blush as well as some Make Up For Ever Face Luminizing Gel in the shade Uplift.

On the lips she used Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Pencil in the shade Barely Pink and topped it off with Clinique’s Long Last Gloss Wear in the shade Air Kiss.

Eyebrows were done up with STILA’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour in the shade Dark. Small short strokes give the brows a subtle and natural effect.

And there you have Look Number One!

Valentine's Day MakeupMoving onto our second and more sultry look…

*We would just like to let you all know that absolutely nothing was altered or taken off my face throughout this transition except for the lip colour (only because I wanted to drink my tea in between shoots). The skin makeup and eye makeup was left as above and she simply applied new darker shades on the eyes to transition from the above sweet day look to the below sultry evening look.

_DSC4976She darkened the eyebrows a bit more with ELF’s Brow Kit in Dark. She did this because one the eyes were more dramatic the brows looked like they needed just a tiny bit more definition.

Jen applied a fresh layer of MAC’s Prolonger Lip Pencil in the shade in Anticipation all over my lips and smeared on some MAC Lip Glass in the shade Nymphette. This resulted in what we believe is a totally sexy Valentine’s Day lip that is ultra kissable!

She worked magic on the eyes with the PATTI DEBROFF Dream Palette with shades Timber, Ochre and the black shade titled Liquorice from PATTI DEBROFF’s Spotlight Palette was used to go all over the liner to soften and smudge it.

_DSC4963 On the eyes used MAC Gel Liner in Black track and put that all over eyelid and smudged it and also used it in the inner waterlines, both upper and lower. That little pop of shimmer that you see when the eye is closed, right above the pupil is MAC “Cinderella Mineralize” eyeshadow… and it is to die for!

Aprés ça, Jen threw on some Ardell lashes in 403, added some more blush et voila!!

Look Number Two

NYE – Modern Magnifique

Good evening lovers!

We’re back today with a little something special. As you all know, we’re ringing in 2016 tonight, and what better way to do it than with a glamorous Gatsby look to match that classy champagne of yours.

Today’s look really emphasizes that glittery smokey eye, with a little signature modern twist of our own ;).

We started off the face with Revlon’s Photo Ready Primer and Brightener, MAC’s Prolonger Concealer in NW15 and Revlon’s Photo Ready Airbrush Effects Foundation in two shades 003- Shell and 010-Caramel. We used the Shell shade all over the high points in the face and contoured with Caramel. It was all set with ELF’s HD Setting Powder.

We slabbed on some MAC 24hour Extend Eye Base Primer and protected the under eyes with ELF’s HD Under Eye Setting Powder and got started with the eyes.

Jen used MAC’s Fluidline Backtrack Eyeliner and STILA’s black eyeshadow in Reason. She threw in a bit of STILA’s grey eyeshadow in Twilight. In the crease, Jen applied STILA’s eyeshadow in the shade Observation. Below on the brow bone she used MAC’s eyeshadow in the shade Blanc Type. For the smokey eye Laura Mercier’s Baked Eye Colour in Charcoal.

To line the inner corners of my eyes and a bit of the under eyeliner she applied NYX’s NYX Glam Liner in GLA04. Over top of that she put Too Faced Glitter Glaze in the shade Goldie Rocks. All over the top of the lid  she used Too Faced Glitter Glaze in Silver Spark.

On the brows she used ELF’s Brow Kit in Dark.

On the lips went on MAC’s Coral Bliss and MAC’s Lip Glass in Beaute. Jen applied MAC’s Sculpting Powder in a nice warm pink blush on the cheeks and also used some MAC Highlighting Powder in Emphasize and Soft Focus to finish off the look.

And taaa daaa!!

12 Days of Christmas – Day 11 – “Ice Queen”

Happy Christmas Eve lovers!!

For the second last day of our 12 Day Lookbook we decided to go all out with a look you probably would never ever do on yourself (unless you were going to go full out for your evil disney character audition), but for art, creativity and colour’s sake we decided to go for it anyway, and it was hella fun!

12 Days of Christmas – Day 10 – “Christmas Cat Eye”

It’s the day before Christmas Eve! 😁😁

And although it may not feel like it quite yet (someone please make it snow), we’ve definitely been in the spirit. Today we thought we’d switch it up a little bit. You see, the original plan here was to put the emphasis on the lips and keep the eyes simple and sweet, but of course when working with Jen, she can’t give you 50%, she goes all out. So we ended up with both a dramatic eye and lip that was pulled together nicely with some cheesy christmas colours and pig tails! Enjoy 🙂

12 Days of Christmas – Day 9 – “Evergreen “

Happy Christmas Eve Eve Eve!!

Today on the blog, we’re back at the eyes with a little bit of forest colour. The key to this look is to blend the heck out of it. This whole photo shoot would not have been possible without the help of our good friend Danielle Renae Photography.

On the skin we have our usual Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener and ELF HD Lifting Concealer in the shade Fair on the skin and sponged on some Revlon PhotoReady Foundation in 005  with an added a touch of green, yellow and brown from Make Up For Ever’s 12 Flash Colour Case, and set it with ELF High Definition Powder.

Now for the centre of attention, les yeux. Obviously Jen threw on some MAC 24h Extended Eye Base Primer. Following that, working from lightest to darkest in MAC Eyeshadow shades she applied, “Chrome Yellow”“Sour Lemon”“Bio Green”“Sprout”, and “Humid”.

Jen used a tad of blush with Estée Lauder’s Pure Colour Blush in Shade 06 “Hot Sienna”.

She touched up my brows with some ELF product using Brow Kit in” Dark”

On the lips went on MAC Creme de Nude Lipstick with a touch of MAC Lipgloss in “C-thru”.

(I felt very exotic)

And voilaaa!

There you have it beauties! Check us out on instagram, pinterest and snapchat @modernmakeupcan and you can find Danielle over here.

Enjoy your evening lovers!

12 Days of Christmas – Day 8 – “Chocolate Marshmallow”

Happy Monday beauties!

Today we are bringing you one of my favourite looks from this campaign. “Chocolate marshmallow” is a great go-to look when you want to jazz up a simple outfit for an event. It warms the atmosphere with an emphasized smokey eye and sweet pink lips.

Like any other day this week we would like to give a big shout out to our good friend Danielle Renea Photography for capturing the best of the best for us.

We started off the skin with Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener and MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW15 on the skin and sponged on some Revlon PhotoReady Foundation in 005  with an added a touch of green, yellow and brown from Make Up For Ever’s 12 Flash Colour Case, and set it with ELF High Definition Powder. This time she added a bit of MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Dark to my cheeks to calm down the pink and make it look more bronzed.

Jen was still out of her usual ELF HD Under Eye Setting Powder so we used our alternative Cinema Secrets Light Touch Powder in Colourless.

For the eyes she started off with our third go to product, MAC 24 Hour Extend Eye Base. She threw on MAC Eyeshadow in “Vanilla” all over lid up to brow bone as a base. After that Jen added MAC Eyeshadow in “Soft Brown” in the crease and a bit of MAC Eyeshadow in “Embark” and built it up in the crease. She threw in just a tad of MAC Eyeshadow in “Carbon” to add definition to the outer V of the crease.

Jen lined eyes with MAC fluidline in “Blacktrack” and set it with Mac Eyeshadow in Carbon. She lined the upper and lower waterlines using Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Shadow in Black (0E). On the lashes went Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Mascara in 001 black. And this time we decided to add some Ardell falsies in 120 Demi.

For the lips she decided on MAC’s Creamsheen Lipstick in “Coral Bliss” and sealed it up with Soft Lips Clear Gloss.

On the brows Jen carefully created small hair strokes with Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour in “Dark”. And added just a tad of the Elf Brow Kit in “Dark” to blend with Stila pen.

And voila!

(when you become besties with the photographer’s dog)

So there you have it lovers! Be sure to check us out on insta @modernmakeupcan and @dreneaphoto. Give us a quick shoutout if you plan to use any of our images and tune in tomorrow for some colour with “Evergreen Forest”.

(I’ll have you know that I got whipped cream up my nose at one point in this photoshoot)

Have a great day!
