Royal Ontario Museum – Friday Night Live with ESTO Style: Northern Spirit

Modern Makeup did some fashion show makeup for models on Friday September 29th, 2017 at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) for their “Friday Night Live” Fashion Show.

This event celebrated both Canada’s 150th birthday as well as Estonia’s 100th birthday, and is also a part of the program for Canada’s national event, Culture Days, which is taking place from September 29th to October 1st, 2017.

Featuring: ESTO Style: Northern Spirit

All makeup provided by Jennifer Turner of Modern Makeup.

My instructions from organizers was to do three different looks. For look number one they asked for an extremely natural look; that no makeup, makeup look.

For each look change I had about 3 minutes with each girl, so the looks had to be something that I could easily transition.

For look # 2 the organizers requested a simple cat eye winged liner.

Look # 3 organizers wanted a smokey eye that really popped and to keep the lip fairly neutral. I decided to do a classic smokey with an intense shimmer glitter on the eyelid.

After applying the eye to the first model I was feeling the glitter love take over and I decided to gloss up their lips with some super sparkly lipgloss!

For this look change I also had about three minutes for each model.

Here are my favourite shots from the third and final look of the night:

I also did some grooming for the male models. For them the look was clean and natural.

I just made sure their skin looked perfect and natural.

Tips on Perfecting Your Cat Eye

While a bold lip or a perfect contour can highlight your facial features, arguably nothing is quite as game-changing as eyeliner. Pencil, gel and liquid liners truly open up the windows to your soul, as the makeup experts from StyleCaster explain, “One little line can transform your makeup look in a big way, not to mention make you feel like a totally confident babe.”  And perhaps the most powerful among the multitude of eyeliner trends is none other than the cat eye.

Whether you are a cat person or not, these felines seem to be our source of inspiration for a lot of things, from yoga exercises that relieve stress and calm the mind  to cat-themed games that feature adorable kittens . And for us beauty addicts, these furry creatures have acted as motivation behind one of the most powerful makeup trends to have stood the test of time.

Cat Eyes

But the problem with this style of liner is the intricacy of the flick and the amount of skill required to create even eyes. Although they say that it’s okay if your eyebrows are more like sisters rather than twins, the same cannot be said for your eye makeup. Unfortunately, not all of us have been blessed with steady hands and the artistry that beauty vloggers execute, but thankfully, there are certain tricks of the trade that you can learn to make it seem like you have the natural ability to have perfect, even wings on each eye.

The first thing you should do before picking up your pen, pencil or brush, is understand your eye shape, since that will determine the appropriate thickness and the angle of the flick. Gurl previously posted an infographic that shows four eye categories and how the application differs for each . Once you have an idea of how thick the liner is and how dramatic you’d like your cat eye to be, you can follow any of the following beauty hacks to nail your winged liner.

1) Use a spoon as your stencil

Tape is often the go-to for those that are absolutely hopeless or don’t have patience for the perfect cat-eye, but the tape can be a bit painful to rip off. Swap the tape out for a spoon instead, using the handle to line the bottom of the wing and the curve of the spoon to finish the shape on top. Then just fill in your wings and line the rest of your lids.

2) Refine the lines with a makeup corrector

Sometimes it’s way easier to correct the mistakes rather than spending more time to even everything out, as you could make your liner much thicker than originally intended. So don’t fret if the lines are immaculate; make use of your makeup eraser, or cotton buds with petroleum jelly.

3) Connect the dots

Remember those colouring books that had you connect the dots to figure out the shapes? The same can be applied to your eyes, but make sure that the dots aren’t too big or uneven to keep the line consistent.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Heres a smoldering look you can try for your special someone tonight 😉

This look is soft with a touch of bold and sexy. I stuck to more neutral golds and browns with this look for all the ladies out there who don’t like experimenting with colours.

I find I meet a lot of women who tell me they generally stick to golds and browns, so I wanted to do a look that shows how you can spice up your typical day-to-day tones for this Valentine’s Day Makeup Look.

50 Shades of Pink – 2 Valentine’s Day Looks with NO Red Lips!

Happy Friday Lovers!

Cupid’s Day is just around the corner and obviously in celebration, our Modern Makeup media team met up during the week for another photoshoot to show you a couple of sweet and steamy looks for this upcoming weekend.

This blog post is going to consist of TWO of our favourite Valentines Day looks! Jen decided to step away from your stereotypical Valentine’s Day red lip look and instead embraced every shade of pink in her palette; transitioning from a soft day time look to a sultry smokey evening face.

Although red lips are very popular right now there are still tons of women out there who just don’t feel comfortable rockin’ a red lip. Wearing a red lip can also require a lot of maintenance and when you’re alone with your special someone this Valentine’s Day constantly re-applying your lip colour can be somewhat of an annoyance. Keep life simple and try pink instead!

We started off with our usual Revlon Photoready Eye Primer and Brightener, ELF HD Lifting Concealer to help hide my midterm eye bags.  Then we sponged on Revlon’s Photoready Air Brush Effect Foundation in 005, and smeared on some MAC 24h Extend Eye Base Primer.

_DSC4923

On the eyes Jen decided to put her new PATI DUBROFF Dream Pallette to use with Rose Quartz on the base, Dessert Rose on the crease, Lilac for the purple smokey look, and Smoke was used to diffuse the eyeliner and make it look softer.

To line the eyes she used Loreal Infallible’s 24h Lacquer Liner in the shade Dark Slate. And to fan out those lashes she used Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Mascara.

_DSC4928

For contour, MAC’s Bone Beige was used. In order to warm it up a bit Jen used some pink blush as well as some Make Up For Ever Face Luminizing Gel in the shade Uplift.

On the lips she used Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Pencil in the shade Barely Pink and topped it off with Clinique’s Long Last Gloss Wear in the shade Air Kiss.

Eyebrows were done up with STILA’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour in the shade Dark. Small short strokes give the brows a subtle and natural effect.

And there you have Look Number One!

Valentine's Day MakeupMoving onto our second and more sultry look…

*We would just like to let you all know that absolutely nothing was altered or taken off my face throughout this transition except for the lip colour (only because I wanted to drink my tea in between shoots). The skin makeup and eye makeup was left as above and she simply applied new darker shades on the eyes to transition from the above sweet day look to the below sultry evening look.

_DSC4976She darkened the eyebrows a bit more with ELF’s Brow Kit in Dark. She did this because one the eyes were more dramatic the brows looked like they needed just a tiny bit more definition.

Jen applied a fresh layer of MAC’s Prolonger Lip Pencil in the shade in Anticipation all over my lips and smeared on some MAC Lip Glass in the shade Nymphette. This resulted in what we believe is a totally sexy Valentine’s Day lip that is ultra kissable!

She worked magic on the eyes with the PATTI DEBROFF Dream Palette with shades Timber, Ochre and the black shade titled Liquorice from PATTI DEBROFF’s Spotlight Palette was used to go all over the liner to soften and smudge it.

_DSC4963 On the eyes used MAC Gel Liner in Black track and put that all over eyelid and smudged it and also used it in the inner waterlines, both upper and lower. That little pop of shimmer that you see when the eye is closed, right above the pupil is MAC “Cinderella Mineralize” eyeshadow… and it is to die for!

Aprés ça, Jen threw on some Ardell lashes in 403, added some more blush et voila!!

Look Number Two

Modern Makeup Owner Places 2nd in National Competition

In August 2015 Modern Makeup I participated in a national competition in search of Canada’s next top makeup artist and am very proud to announce that I was awarded the runner-up position!

Contestants were judged over a three-week period by Sheriff Cosmetics on their work on models for both Top Model Search Canada and Miss Teenage Canada 2015.

The competition kicked off with over 80 models from all across Canada in the Top Model Search Canada pageant who were looking to get noticed by top modelling agencies from all over the globe. Models were judged on many different attributes including interview skills, photo shoots, runway and of course their overall look.

Check out some of the photos from behind the scenes from Top Model Search Canada 2015:

Top Model Search Canada is a wonderful opportunity/experience for young models across the country who want to seriously get noticed. One thing that stood out to me amongst this group of girls was their kindness and their desire to succeed. I watched new friendships form that will last a lifetime and got to be a part of an unforgettable experience.

Just a few days after the Top Model Search Canada pageant came to a close I was back doing makeup for the Miss Teenage Canada 2015 pageant. This time, young representatives from all across Canada were in Toronto hoping to be crowned the next Miss Teenage Canada and move on to represent Canada in the Miss Teenage Universe pageant.

When you think of beauty pageants you may assume it’s all about the looks, but after being so closely involved and hearing all the girls’ stories, I would argue that being a contestant in a pageant like Miss Teenage Canada is one of the toughest and most rewarding experiences a young girl can be a part of.

These young women travelled far and wide, the majority of whom travelled alone without any family or friends and showed so much dedication and strength. They were put through rigorous rehearsals and had a full week of a schedule in which practically every second of their time was spoken for.

Check out some of the photos from the Miss Teenage Canada 2015 pageant:

I was very proud to have had the honour to participate in both of these incredible modelling pageants and to meet so many of the amazing young women who were competing. Coming home with second place is something I feel very proud to have accomplished. When I first entered the competition, I thought it would be a great experience and that’s all I was really looking for out of it, was the experience. As the competition got well underway I started to realize that I was one of the most talented artists in the competition and that I may have a chance at doing quite well. The realization alone was rewarding enough for me and although I did not come first, second will do just fine! I still feel like a winner just by having this wonderful opportunity to participate in two fantastic Canadian events.

Red, White and SNOW! Outdoor Winter Boudoir

It certainly was a cold day for an outdoor photoshoot but these girls toughed it out like champions!

Armed with bra, panties, boots and a stunning white faux fur cape these two girls tackled the most extreme conditions and were rewarded with some absolutely breathtaking images to cherish.

Take a look at just a few of the stunning images from this cold winter wonderland:Modern Makeup - Innovative Makeup Designs

(What you don’t know about the above image is that I am actually tucked in behind her and was tossing the bottom of the cape out in order to get that great movement.)

Who’s idea was this anyways?

The only one inventive enough to come up with a plan to take two models out in their underwear and photograph them in -20 weather is Danielle Renea from Danielle Renea Photography. A beautiful change of pace from your typical boudoir photo shoot. Together, we go above and beyond for each and every one of our clients, making sure to deliver photos that exceed their expectations.

When the chattering of teeth became too much the two models would switch places, one retreating to the nearby heated vehicle.

Anyone who knows me knows that I feel strongly that there is a time and a place for red lips. The ombre red lip above was one of my favourite red lips I’ve done to date. I love the way this look came together and I am very happy with the outcome.
